I've seen this referenced in other threads but no direct answers. My trans seems to slip with a heavy thump under load and only slight throttle between first and second. It actually only happens when I'm in traffic crawling up a steep hill. If I give it a little throttle, lift off slightly, and then throttle again, sometimes it will slip and bang with a little hesitation in between. Sounds like it's coming from the rear though, I'm guessing the driveshaft is transferring the force. Trans fluid always looks fine and was recently changed. Anything I should be looking for in the trans or the rear diff perhaps? I haven't checked the diff fluid yet. Thanks in advance!

You have steep hills in Toronto?

A clunk under load changes can also be your ujoints or rear pinion....even a bad torque converter, although that will generally cause slipping not a clunk. Check your joints/ pinion first.. Easy to check yourself, do a google on it.

Ok thanks, I'll have a look this afternoon. That would cause that bad of a thump though? I don't really get any vibrations while driving or any strange noises when I put it into gear or start from a stop.

your likely correct, just an easy preliminary check to look at the rear ujoints and pinion. The trans is much more complicated and outside of linkages or loose hoses, can be hard to assess

So everything under here looks ok. I'm pulling and pushing and there's no play in the pinion and maybe a slight bit in the front u joint. While its in neutral though I CAN slightly turn the driveshaft and wiggle it in the front where it slides into the trans. Normal or horrific issue waiting to happen?

EDIT - Upon further research it appears that some play is normal, how much though, I'm not sure. I'm curious if it's my throttle position sensor maybe.... Telling it to shift when it shouldn't? That may not be how the TPS works though. If all else fails I'll take it to a trans shop for a full flush and get them to see if there's any fun bits floating around in the fluid.

Anyone know what the torque converter stall speed should be?
