windshield replacement

Just got back from two weeks in BC, camping at Ellison Provincial Park and beachcombing Galiano Island. Fantastic vacation but came home with a badly cracked windshield that needs replacing. Talked briefly to Stephen at Rising Sun who wants $650 to pull a used one out of a wreck but thought I'd do some research before I take the plunge. Max Overdrive has a new one for $460 but won't ship to Calgary. Sent Rocky Mountain Imports an email but haven't heard back from them yet.
Do you generally have to replace the moulding with the glass? Any suggestions on packing/shipping a windshield if I buy from Max Over? Anyone else sell windshields?
Thanks!

Talk to Rocky Mountain. They have them available for a better price than on their website. Steven could probably hook you up too. Either way they ain't cheap.

I got a quote from Dynasy Auto Glass a few months ago. They said 499.00 installed and that they have a windshield in stock. Talked to Bruce who talked Derek to get it all sorted out. Here is the contact info from that email.....

Thanks for the great feedback everyone. Just talked to Bruce at Dynasty in Calgary and he does have L300 glass in stock, but not L400. Still he's making some calls to find what he can for me. Would love to deal locally if at all possible. RMI left a vm last night (Sunday!) saying they have a windshield in stock. Will likely deal with them if I have to go out of province.

I have comprehensive insurance coverage but don't want my premiums to increase so I'm "self-insuring"

ICBC premiums don't go up when you get a new windshield. Chalk up another one for socialized insurance...

Mine is covered here in Alberta if I pay my deductible. My deductible is $2500. Yep- Brilliant.

Blevesque: I recently went through this maze.
L400 glass comes in green and bronze tint both with or without wiper blade heaters.
If you have wiper heaters the glass is ridiculous pricey!!!! $3000.000 - $4000.00 (new)
No heaters: glass from China is about $460.00
Rising Sum Imports does part out Delicas and does regularly have used L400 windshields but you need to call them.
Places that have or are know to have front glass are:
Amazing Auto
Maximum Overdrive
Rocky Mountain Imports (Instock + shipping to calgary + installation)
Combs Country Auto might have them also
The glass trim/rubber seal should be changed as the original stuff is probably rock hard and usually breaks during the removal of your old windshield. The rubber trim costs between 20.00 and 30.00 based on my current research but that price varies depending on where you get the glass installed. And there are 2 types Of this trim that I seen. One is very close to stock OE, the second has a wider lip that would sit on the a-pillar.
Hope this info helps.
PS: My glass is getting installed while I'm in Richmond. I will take pics and post them later as it would be nice to know what's involved.

I do guess it wouldn't be a good policy to replace windshields at a reduced rate in Alberta seeing they use pea gravel to "sand" the roads...A dozen Alberta trips has cost me 4 windshields in the past 10 years!!

RMI has new green tint glass without the de-icer for $360. Throw in $135 for shipping to Calgary and another $130 or so for install and new rubber for a total $625 for a brand new windshield. Compare this to RSI's used offering at $850 for the glass and shipping only.
RMI had some shipping challenges that delayed the process by a full week while they sourced a new shipper but finally Canadian Freightways delivered it (intact) to my door for $135. Next step is installation. The guys at Dynasty in Calgary are knowledgeable and friendly but I'm going to look into a mobile service to see if the extra cost of having someone come do the install is justified.
Will follow with a final post once complete. Thanks again everyone for the feedback, hopefully there's some value in this string for the next broken windshield.

Booked an appointment with Dynasty to get the install done. They had quoted $125 plus $30 for the new moulding but called back to say it would be a minimum $200 plus $45 for the moulding. So long Dynasty. At the same time I found a mobile windshield installer online. I was initially very hesitant but after talking to the guy decided to take the plunge. He came to my house yesterday, did the install for $150, didn't charge me for the moulding, sprayed rust inhibitor on a little rust spot along the top edge of the frame where L400s often rust, left the vehicle cleaner than he found it and was generally very polite and pleasant to deal with. Can't recommend him highly enough. His name is Lance Purchase, website is windshieldcalgary.com, phone 403 616-4957

That sounds like Dynasty over near Edmonton Trail. I dealt with them once....by mistake. Worst service I ever had.
Good to know about your glass guy success. We as a group should look at getting a case of L400 windshields shipped to calgary.
Oh. And if you think an L400 windshield will fit in the back of a Highroof L400. Dam tight. These things are taller than they look!
