L300, Green 4WD drivetrain icon (think it shows driveshafts/axles and tcase off top of my head) stays on in the dash regardless of position of 4wd tcase lever. The red wheel lock light comes on in 4wd.

Should this not turn off? Auto hub issue?

Autos hubs are wonderful. To cancel the 4x4 light, in neutral with brake on, move levers back to 2wd. then take off brake, and reverse at least one full tire rotation, should hear a clunk under your feet, and the light goes out. cheers christine.

I have tried this several times, including driving backwards down a gravel road and down a paved road for at least 50 feet. If it is in 4wd and I switch back to 2wd on the shifter and reverse, the wheel lock light goes off with a clunk but the green axle/driveshaft/tcase image stays on in the dash.

I have yet to jack up the vehicle and see what is turning or not turning in the equation....

Maybe just a wiring issue.....otherwise I am driving around in 4wd on pavement!?

If you hear a clunk then its out of 4x4
Check the sensor or wire to and from the sensor.
Could have a crappy connection some where.

I just noticed the green drive train light (looks like drawing of wheels/axles) coming on after I put the key in. It goes away after I start the engine. Any idea why this is showing up right now?

The wiring to the 4WD light is quite basic: inside the instrument panel, ignition-switched power is applied to one side of the light bulb. The other side of the light bulb is connected via a Yellow/Black stripe wire to the 4WD switch on the transfer case- and from there to earth when the switch is on.

The least likely (but easiest to fix) would be a faulty 4WD switch- try shifting the lever into and out of 4WD a couple of times, that might reset it.

For your 4WD light to come on, the Yellow/Black stripe wire has to be connected to earth somewhere. The way it comes on at first and then goes out when the engine's running suggests the wire has rubbed through somewhere and makes contact with something metal when the engine is still, but stops making good contact when the engine's vibrating. I'd climb under the van, clean the wires coming from the transfer case switches, and check anywhere they go near anything metal. Take care though, those wires can be brittle from all the oil in that area. Have some electrical tape nearby in case you need to fix the insulation.

Here's what the 4WD switches look like- they're on the right hand side of the transfer case, and from there the wires go over and along the left side of the transmission. Yes, I know the wire colour is wrong- it changes to Yellow/black stripe just out of shot.
