A/C Compressor Noisy

Post by izack98 »

I installed a new A/C belt on my L400 the other day. I couldn't adjust the old one any more. It appears to have stretched and there was no more adjustment on the idler pulley. The A/C was working fine all summer.
I replaced the belt with an after market version - all seemed fine.
While driving home from work that night, I smelled burning rubber. I checked the belt when I got home and it had burned through and was laying in the pan. I bought an OEM belt and installed that today. Now when the A/C kicks in, the compressor makes a rattling noise. The noise isn't there when the compressor is not engaged. The center nut on the compressor shaft is tight. I can tell the noise is coming form the compressor itself. The idler pulley is turning smoothly. I don't want to run the compressor long enough to determine if it is still blowing cold air (plus that's hard in this weather).
Has anyone ever replaced their compressor? Are there bearings that can be replaced or would it be something more serious?
Any good A/C mechanics in the lower mainland?
Any advice? Suggestions?

Our AC hasn't worked since we got her, the compressor kicks on when the defrost/ac is used and when it is engaged it rattles horribly! We just turn of the ac button(snow flake) when we use our defrost function. I spoke to Butch at CVI about this and he said it is most likely the center shafts bolt as this is what locks pully to shaft, I just haven't had time to explore to much further In This weather.

I checked the center shaft nut and, unless I am not doing it right, it seems tight.
