Help - Stuck in Baja, rear caliper issues

Post by Scrappysvan »

Hey all - long time lurker first time poster,

I have a 1998 Gen 2 L400 with rear discs and a seized caliper. Need to cross reference the rear calipers with something I can get in Baja, MX. I see a post to "Louise" from NVan that the Mitsubishi Montero 1994 would fit my vehicle can someone please confirm. Also can anyone tell me what DOT break fluid do I use? - although I am stuck in paradise, Unfortunately I do have to get home so if any one can shed some light asap that would be greatly appreciated.

Already tried: cleaning and lubing caliper sliding / shoulder bolts but have not removed the piston as we don't know if we can get parts, however it is obviously the problem.

cheers

You might be able to source a rear caliper from mid-90's Montero Sport with the V6 engine. There are a few 'legacy' parts on that model which cross over to the Delica L400 (Spacegear). Luckily this model was sold in the USA.

You could have a caliper express couriered from BC as the Local GVA suppliers of new and used JDM parts do have them....they might even have a rebuild kit which might be cheaper.

A final alternative: Try working the piston back into your caliper with a caliper press or large channel lock pliers. There could be some crud that is causing the jam.

Brake fluid is DOT-3 for the L400.

Rear brakes should x-ref with the 1996 Montero SR as well.

I've sprayed penetrating compund under the piston skirt then turned the actual piston to free it from the rust. Just a temp solution.

Update: a little late as I'm still on manyana mx time.

The match make turned out to be a 1998 montero but I assume a 96 would work as well. If you find yourself broken down near la Paz, BCS. Try a place called Camerenna's first. They were awesome, know their 4x4 stuff, and truly want to help.

They had seals in stock and a shop to clean an put together, so we ended up with a rebuild. Took a few tries at the bleed but everything is back up an running and we are on our way home.

*** something to note all the delica's in BCS we came acrooss have all had a caliper fail. (Three inc. us) If you are planning a long trip get them checked or bring backup seals***

Got some good off road time, and other than the brake issue van is a trooper! Highly recommend the trip!

Cheers, dal
