I found a thread somewhere that the whole arm is removable, I have been trying to remove it prying it, but no luck. Sprayed some WD40, nothing.
Any tips on removal of rear wiper?

With me not knowing the point you are in this repair I will start at the beginning for others who might find this informative. Take the plastic cover off the motor pivot point. There are 2 plastic tabs (at my thumb and index finger) that hold the cover in place. The cover can be removed by hand by gently prying the tabs backoff the arm. A little wiggle of the wiper arm lifting pivot while pulling the cover will usually release the cover. Remove the 10mm nut. There might be a lock washer under that. Using your hands exert gentle side to side movement of the wiper arm at the motor pivot point which will work the corrosion loose that tends to hold the arm to the splines of the pivot. Don't use hammers and pry bars as the drive gears inside the wiper motor are prone to shattering when hit or pryed on.

If the corrosion has a death grip on the splines you can soak the wiper pivot with vinegar, just apply a liberal amount on the pivot with a q-tip. This might take several applications of vinegar but it does work.

Edit: DOH! Mine are front wipers - I haven't tried as hard to remove on the rear because I was having so much trouble up front

I have a 1992 L300 Delica exceed. I'm not sure if the wiper arms are OEM, but here are pictures: I have removed the 12mm nut on top of the arm, but I can't get it to budge despite penetrating oil and fiddling with gentle prying and what not. I did not remove the plastic cover as it hinged out of the way, but perhaps that it somehow the key? My arm looks slightly different than this with a 12mm bolt instead of 10mm.

PS - rubber o-ring was an attempt at waterproofing, but now plan to use polyurethane while re-attaching wiper spindles.

I got it figured; feeling pretty silly. Showed it to my roomate, my dad - none of us figured it out over the past several days till I took a breather and revisited last night.

Removed the plastic cover (this was the absolutely essential step). It had been soaking in penetrating oil since I got home; although in retrospect it may have been unnecessary had I simply removed the plastic cover earlier.

With the plastic cover off there was an extra milimeter or so required to rock the wiper arm against the spindle causing it to crack loose!

The retaining nut appears to be a weird size - 15/16" or perhaps 23mm - so perhaps that should be added to the tools list thread? I'm not sure if it's meant to just be hand threaded, but a wrench sure makes it easier!

It doesn't need to be too tight, the boss it screws onto is fairly weak alloy. It's probably 24mm, but an adjustable wrench should do the job.

But agreed it likely shouldn't be as tight as I did it up - problem is deciding where to put sealant since there appear to be gaps in several places, obviously can't put sealant on the threads or the bolt which rotates the wipers, but it appears that there is a gap between the rotating bolt and the taper ... hmmm

I would just put sealant here:
I'd put grease on the rest of it. Though your wiper arm is a little different to mine. I'd take a photo, but it's dark out right now.

OK well the saga continues. I put sealant on the other day while it was dry, rained about 20h later. The repair was appearing to do it's job until today when it started sort of peeling up ... it still looks functional, but I'm wondering if the grease I used when I reinstalled the arms had an effect on the sealant (polyurethane).

In any case upon reinstalling the wipers they jumped down onto the body under the windshield and then I stopped the power and budged them a little. I think I broke a linkage because after that they stopped working and I can only hear the motor running in circles with no movement in the wipers. The wipers still move together when moved by hand. I reached behind the wiper motor and there is a nut missing off the bolt at the back ... I found a loose washer, but no nut ... it must have fallen someplace hard to find.

OK well I put a spare nut on the drive shaft to re-attach the linkage - no dice. The motor just whirs constantly when I turn the wipers on ...

I figure I'm extremely close and it just needs some adjustment somewhere, but obviously being behind the dash it's pretty hard to guess where :p

Update. I felt around and noticed the linkage was probably misaligned somehow. I reattached the linkage after taking it apart and positioning the swiveling links (bars) at either end of the main link like so \------\

It works! It still sounds funny, I need to adjust the arms for reach and stopping point. I do feel that I broke *something* I only have one speed, and turning the wipers to max the motor is louder than I recall ... I think I hear a bit of rubbing from somewhere along the main link also.

Anyways - LIVE AND LEARN - mark your wiper arm position on the spindles!!
