New IP rebuild, now sputters on startup

I had my injector pump rebuilt recently. Now when starting cold she cranks longer, starts and then shakes/studders/sputters intermittently for the first minute or so before settling down. When the sputter occurs, black smoke comes out the tailpipe.

Before this, even with a leaky IP, she started up perfectly.

I've read a few posts on this, but wondering opinions...

Is this a poorly connected IP?
Timing reset improperly?
Air coming in to the fuel?

Thanks

Is guess timing and air. Timing really mucks it up

Second the air. Sounds like a pump that is self bleeding air. You could bleed by hand before starting to check I suppose.

for the high price of an IP rebuild, I would return it for warranty or demand a refund.
I would never try to diagnose or work on something under warranty.
it HAS a warranty doesn't it? :?

No warranty... I never even met the guy! Had to send it off by courier to the other end of the island to some old timer who is the only person who rebuilds these things. Oh PEI.
Just getting someone to look at my van here is a major challenge. The shop that took it out specialises in heavy equipment and semi trucks. The only one that would attempt it.

I did determine that the problem was air as it was losing its prime. A simple test of manually priming the pump stopped the problem. No fuel leak to be found however. Tomorrow I'm going to the shop that removed it in hopes that the problem lies in one of the many connections to the pump and not a seal in the pump itself.

Driving 6000km back to BC May 1st.
