Big mystery... blank buttons on either side of the steering wheel. Any idea what should be in their spots?

I have a couple of round blanks, one on either side of the steering wheel.

The one on the right, was that for manually tuning the idle?

I believe the "i" button is supposed to be for the parking pole but right now I have no idea what it does. The light button next to it actually makes the parking pole go up or down. When the headlights are on the indicator in the button is always on, whether the pole is up or down.

Was the rightmost one supposed to be for fog lights? There is room in the relay box for fog lights and there is a plug behind the front grille with nothing connected to it but I don't know what it was for.
Or maybe the button to the left with the indicator light was supposed to be for the fog lights...

Left blank - in my case a broken aftermarket backup sensor system.

thanks. Maybe I can figure out what that "i" button does right now... it may not be connected to anything. Not looking forward to following those wires around the harness.
If the button isn't doing anything, I could connect the pole to it and move the button with the indicator light to the right side blank rectangle and hook up some fog lights.

I also have a couple of wires sticking out from under the carpet under the driver's seat, but they look like stock wires:

The seat heater works, they can't be for that. Maybe I can see on the electrical diagrams what a black wire with a white line means.

There used to be a little plastic rectangle glued to the side of the center console, definitely aftermarket, I removed it because only the white plastic rectangle was there.

The round plug above your hood latch is where the manual throttle control is located.
I have the same plug on the left side, not sure what that one is for.

I read through some of the manuals... B-W wire just means it's connected to the ignition system. At least a dozen things are powered when you put the key in the ignition and turn it a notch or two: glow system, warning lamps. charging system, MPI (? not sure what that means) system, fuel and oil warning lights... Also bottom and rear seat heaters, rear blower, rear heater... I think I may just compare under the passenger and driver side seats and see if I can see similar wires (hopefully, connected!) on the passenger side.

That fog light switch nearest the driver side door seems to be for a "rear fog lamp", I couldn't for the life of me figure out what that meant but apparently it's for the rectangular red light embedded in the rear bumper on the driver's side -- according to the 1995 manual it only lights up or exists on the driver's side. Kind of weird... fog is everywhere when it's present, not just on one side It makes sense that people would hook up the front fog lights to that same switch.

The driver side switch spot nearest the steering column in mine has just a coin changer, maybe that's pretty standard. I read somewhere that there may be a "card holder", not sure what that could be for, business cards or credit cards? Maybe something special they use in Japan that we don't have here. No idea.

I haven't found the "i" button and other things on the central side of the steering column in the manuals yet. Still looking.

Those illustrators are pretty amazing really, it must have taken them at least a thousand man-hours to draft all those diagrams. And I think that was before CAD really took off, AutoCAD was available starting in the mid-1980s but it wasn't all that great, those manuals may have all been drawn by hand on drafting tables, rulers, white erasers, metal shields, C and D paper, blueprints etc. Reminds me of high school drafting class, I liked that. Good times.

I was curious how to remove that rear washer sprayer, but in the manual it just shows the plug and its description says "removal" - LOL, that's really helpful.

MPI = Multi Port Injection (Gas v6 engine, not diesels)

Rear fog lights: This is a very 'european thing' and is common. Having rear facing red lights that are brighter allows for other drivers to see you before they hit you. Ford has installed this on their Transit Vans which are sold now in Canada and the US.

And the right side switch spot where your coin holder is where some versions of L400's have their auxiallary light switches. One is for power the second is to switch on either set of lights...some Delis have white and yellow lights in the tube bumper...Sadly my Exceed II doesn't have a dash light dimmer like you do.

I checked my owners manual and the sales brochure. The brochure showed all the switches and blanks you have with the exception of the 'i' switch....It could have come from another Mitsu as this switch style is a widely used legacy part found in Pajero's, Montero's, and some of their car models.

Did you pop it out and see if its connected to anything? It could been part of an aftermarket system the owner in Japan removed. Like a phone, tv, cd system.....Hell mine had a dvd based Nav System and bag phone connection with a TV on the dash....nothing worked so out it came!
