Hey all, new to the board and just bought an L300.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but I believe all L300's came with the 2.5td engine? If not that's what it has.

It also has a 5spd manual trans which I believe is fairly rare? Now the issue is that the trans is screwed, hence why I got the van at such a good price.

It gets jammed in 3rd, if it decides to engage 4th it'll usually do it grinding (double declutching or not) and over bumps pops out of fourth.

I've decided I'd like to try and get a hold of a known good 5spd and swap it in, instead of opening it up and diagnosing/repairing it. I feel like that would just be a can of worms and not worth my time, I bought this as a surf trip camping van, not a project. I changed the fluid with little to no improvement shown.

Problem is... these tranny's seem to be very rare, I can't find one. So my questions to you all very knowledgeable people are:

1. would the gear train from a 1993 pajero's trans fit and work in this transmission's housing/case ?

2. Would the flywheel and clutch from the pajero work on this van?

3. what are the two transmission part #'s? or codes

4. Does anyone have a used transmission for sale that I could acquire from you?

it is a KM145 or something...

guts should swap out of a ford/mazda/mistu (I think the RX7 version might give a lower 5th gear)...

Problem is Delica uses a unique cable shifter... so I suspect you need to reuse your cases.

lots of rebuild kits available on ebay (I talk to one dealer who would take the kit back if it did not fit)....

You can also get a pan kit to strengthen it..

shift it slow, do not down shift it to stop (brakes cheaper than trannys)....

I say always downshift when you are slowing down or going down a hill, just do it at the right rpms - no slamming nor screaming motors...

It is fine to down shift to hold back or get the right gear...

But slamming down the gear box to help stop every stop is a lot of unnecessary shifts and wear on the syncros (especially if the RPM is not matched) ..

I loved my 5 speed L300 and would not enjoyed the auto...

I was just up at Malahat auto wreckers today. They have a delica with a Manual 5 spd in it. Maybe you could get that for parts? have it rebuilt and swap it into yours?

So after much calling around it seems nobody has a used working sellable 5spd for me. So I decided to pull the tranny and take a look at what I could see.
The pilot bearing no longer exists, or at least it does but is now in many scattered pieces, which may be where this alllllll started.

Took the pan off and front cover off of the input shaft to see what I could find. It appears the main shaft input side bearing is toast, you get about 1mm - 2mm of freeplay when you wiggle the input shaft. No I noticed that 3rd gear is closest to it, next is 4th. The dogs and syncro's on them dont look too bad at all. I'm thinking it may just be a case where the slop and freeplay from that bearing has caused the issues.

I thinking of possibly just getting a set of seals for the t-case and trans, new main input bearing. Clean it out, flush some fluid through it and reinstall. all in hopes it works.

Your thoughts???

Oh and where on the case can I find the model code? I'm hoping it is a KM 145 because there seem to be quite a few bearing/syncro/seal kits on ebay.
