Towing the L300

Does anyone know if you can tow the delica with the wheels down if you put the transfer case in neutral? I know you generally can't have driving wheels down with an auto, but I was wondering if the transfer case disconnects the rear driveline at all? Or does the rear drive shaft have to come off?

transfer case disengages front only or else you'd be able to put tranny in gear eg D, disengage transfer case, and not move on revving the engine

For short distances yes you can flat tow an automatic....and thats usually only 1km before heat from lack of lube can cause damage.

You really shouldn't flat tow any automatic vehicle.

In your case Even if a transfer case placed the drive in neutral some of the internals still spin and with no fluid moving around to lubricate the bearings you could cause plenty of damage through heat buildup.

Disconnecting the rear drive shaft is one option as long as its a bolt on style at both ends.

If you have slip yoke at the transmission end you would need to seal that so tranny fuild doesn't escape out the tail shaft. I would not recommend using wire or a ratchet strap to tie your rear drive shaft up out of the way as it will bounce around and most certainly cause damage to itself or worse it could fall out completely and hit someone behind you.

Put the van in park, shift the transfer case into neutral, release the parking brake. If the van rolls, you can flat tow it.

Do l300's have the AW-3 transmission? It's the same as most Jeeps, which can be flat towed as described here:

Of course, I'm just some dude on the internet. Do your own research and convince yourself.

well thats new to me! I am gonna check my own t-case lever and see of 'N' is a selection or not.

Very interesting either way...and some jeeps used the same tranny as the L300....

My 1991 L300 doesn't have a Neutral position on the transfer case lever.
