Central locking

Hello everyone,
Now that I finally have my Delica I am looking to change a few things. On my US spec 1990 model it had central locking which consisted of a system where when you pushed down on the drivers side lock it would lock the other two doors. Lifting up unlocked the other two doors. I imagine the Japanese spec vans used the same system. I assume the wiring is there for this in all vans, and I am wondering if I somehow came to get all of the necessary parts if it would be possible to install it in my new 89 Delica?

They do have central locking systems. Sometimes what happens is a wire gets caught up in the window mechanism and gets severed, ergo cutting the power to the system. You can take the panel off of the interior driver's side door and take a gander for any severed wires. I've just done this recently and I took pictures but they are still on my phone and my internet cafe is closing soon, so it'll have to be next time when I've up-loaded them.

Are you sure they ALL have central locking or if it is an option that mine doesn't have?

They do. Even my 1990 had it.

Well I removed the drivers side door panel, and there are no wires going to the lock mechanism on my van. I didn't even see the wires in the door. Just the two wires for the power windows. My guess is the van is wired for it under the dash maybe, but not in the door. I would still like to install it if it is possible.

there is a chance the model might not have central locking spec. If there are not terminals on the lock mech there is no motor to operate.
if there are dash wires, you'd be able to get a unit for the lock from another van

Not all L300s have central locking- the low spec delivery vans (also labelled as Delicas when sold in Japan) usually don't, but it was a standard feature on people mover Delicas. If it was sold in Japan, and has lots of seats, and the word "Delica" on the tailgate, it should have central locking.
I suspect your "US Spec Delica" is actually a Vanwagon, right? I think central locking was an option on those.

My US spec Delica was indeed a Wagonvan people mover with the LS package. My real Delica was sold in Japan with the 8 person seating option but does not have central locking even though it has power windows. Strange, I think. The sliding door has the contacts on the front edge of it that would allow power into the door for the power locks, but the drivers door had no provisions for wiring to send the signal to the other doors. My guess is the van has some of the wiring for it in place, but I need to get the rest, and the two actuators for the slider, and passenger door.

It *is* weird that your sliding door has the contacts, but your drivers door doesn't have anything. Usually the driver's door doesn't have a solenoid/actuator, only has a switch inside it- from memory it's low down in the door, and operated by a pushrod (but it's been a while since I had mine apart so I might be misremembering). I wonder if your driver's door has been replaced?
How about the passenger and sliding doors? Do they have the actuators?

Hey guys,
I figured out something yesterday with the door locks. While I don't have central locking I did find that locking the rear gate with the dash mounted button will also lock the sliding door(as long as it is closed), so it seems I am just lacking the switch in the drivers door, wiring, and actuator in the passengers door. I think that should be a bit easier to find than I had anticipated.

I'm thinking along the lines of Growlerbearnz and wondering if somewhere in your wagon's history if a door got changed out with an L300 body style van door of a lesser class? Like a delivery van, for instance.

I think the idea that one or both front doors may have been replaced makes sense. Certainly if you have the button on the dash and lock the rear and slider, it should also have locks on the front. The locks from a US Spec Vanwagon or Deli should be easy to source.

If the door were replaced (highly unlikely) don't you think the wiring would still be present?

The MLB is a P25W (P/new L300; 2/standard "aero roof" 4X4; 5/ diesel; W/ wagon [people mover]) Created on 3 October, 1992.
When I turn the key in the driver's side door to lock the vehicle it automatically locks all three doors (not including the tailgate). The same goes for unlocking. Not if the door came from an L300 body type that didn't originally come with central locking. Chris, check out L300 Dedicated Category Reference Forum/L300 Shop Manual Downloads/L-300 Overview & General Maintenance Information. This technical data was originally composed for the early gen III wagons, in particular: The L300 Overview. This shows a lot of the L300s that were exported from Japan to various parts of the world and include variations of the L300 (2WD, 4WD, LWB, SWB &c.)
One other thought: My wagon came with a cheap remote keyless entry that didn't work when I got her, many wagons did. Take out your driver's seat (four 12mm bolts) and see if there's a little plastic or metal (or both) black box under it. If you see this box then your wagon most definitely originally had a central locking system.

Having prattled on about historical L300 semantics ~ you have a door missing central locking equipment. What are you planning to do about it?
