Flashing 4WD light

I have a '96 L400 and during the summer the 4WD indicator light (two front wheels on the instument panel) would start flashing for no apearant reason. Normally when I take it out of 4WD the light blinks until the trasfer out of 4WD is completed, but now it was happening at random times. Sometime, while driving down the road in 2WD, it would just start blinking. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems but it is a bit of a worry. Does anyone know what might cause this or what it might mean? Thanks for any insight.

A flashing yellow light is usually caused by a faulty Transfer Case Lever detector switch in the transmission. Its annoying but as long as your transfer case is set where you want it its not a serious issue. Confirm something for me: If you shift into 4wd does the light stay on? There is a group of 5 switches located at the top of the tranny....real ignorant location too! It can be one of 2 switches that cause the light to flash because the wires are hard from age and usually short out or break off. The switches are available but are a pain to swap. I have to do mine and have the 2 offending units in the tool box ready to go.

If your green front diff light is flashing its usually the vacuum solenoid pair on the drivers side firewall and or the accumulator can and actuator at the front diff (under the Delica). This is very common and is much easier to fix.

When I put it in 4WD, the lights come on and stay on as they should. When I take it out of 4WD it sometimes blinks and then turns off as it should and sometimes it just keeps blinking.
