made no sense even after reading it 30 times.

The oil pump is driven directly off the motor. The alternator has an oil feed to the vacuum pump on the back of the alternator. If the alternator belt breaks you just have no charging and your brakes get really hard to push (as well as running rougher as there are a few vacuum solenoids for the engine). I have an alternator with no vacuum pump and the oil feed blocked off and everything still works.
