I wonder what would be involved/costs etc. Might be do-able for an East Coaster. These things seem cheap in the UK.

they are cheap in the UK, however they're cheaper in Japan...
and at nearly $3000 for a 1989 vehicle... you can do better, especially once you try to ship it...

Whether you decide to buy and ship it or not, I'd be very interested in hearing more about trans-Atlantic shipping. The first Renault Twingos turn 15 in 2008. All Mark 1 Twingos were LHD (much to the chagrin of folks in the U.K.), so ICBC can hardly complain... :-)

Sorry, Laura, wasn't actually thinking of buying it, so won't be investigating cross Atlantic shipping. I had been on some UK forums and noticed prices for L300s and even some L400s seemed cheaper than L300s here. Odd, since the distance is further from Japan to the UK. I also remembered some posts on this site saying prices in Japan for decent vans had gotten up to around this price ( 1295GBP=just under $2600CAD at today's rates including a couple percent exchange fee). Thinking that since the distance from UK to Eastern Canada is less than from Japan to Vancouver, it may be work out cheaper especially since it must be costly getting a van from Vancouver to the East coast. Also since these vehicles seem to have to go through regular inspections in the UK to stay on the road, I thought they might be in pretty good shape.

The things I occupy myself with to avoid doing the dishes

ps Good luck with the Twingo!

Even with all those nice extras? Plus it's an auction--might go for less.

1295.00GBP is the "buy it now" price.

1 295.00 British pounds = 2 534.67 Canadian dollars
but shipping is the big part of the cost, and it's unlikely to be in as good shape as one from Japan, it's also a 1989 which isn't as valuable as a 1991 or higher

not to mention, I'd never buy a car on e.bay sight unseen... The Japanese auction houses have a reputation to maintain, E.bay just doesn't care.
