I believe my turbo needs to be replaced or rebuilt. I have some oil in the inter cooler pipes, a little smoke sometimes at start-up and I've lost quite a bit of power when climbing hills.

I am thinking of going the replacement rout, with 100,000 kms on the van, I'd feel better investing the money on a new one. I can find a new one online for around $300 USD + shipping. I'm reasonably mechanically inclined and have worked on motorcycles small jobs with other vehicles, is this something I can easily tackle?

The access to it looks quite easy, but I'm assuming a bolt or 2 will be welded on. I have all the torque specs for all of the bolts when putting the new unit back on. The kit also comes with a set of gaskets, so I should be good there as well.

Will I need to drain the oil and coolant, or can I just assume that a little will leak out and top it up after I'm done?

I can also find the rebuild kit online for $50, but I think this will require a lot more effort, and much riskier of something going wrong with my experience in my opinion....

Would welcome some feedback to see if I am on the right track.

Good rule of thumb is to check the Blow off valve spring assembly first. A weak seal or spring would show a loss of power under load. A rebuild kit is easy to install , a few bolts and c-clips are all that hold the turbo together.
The trick is ensuring the new impeller and compressor assembly are balanced or they will tear out bearings in a matter of seconds. This isn't something you can do yourself so ensure your rebuild kit states the impeller/compressor is balanced.

Your OE compressor might be damaged or chipped but you won't know until you do the tear down. Lots of Turbo Rebuild videos on youtube. Stick with Subaru or Toyota Turbos instructionals if you can't find anything Delica or Pajero related.
