Raised my Delica tonight with the jack, to change a rear brake pad...

The OEM jack sank into the asphalt soon after I took the wheel off, the jack leaned forward and the van moved about two inches forward, enough for the jack to tip over.

I am off to buy axle stands and a new jack asap. My van isn't going anywhere for the time being.

No injuries but I wonder what could happen to people who just want to change a rear tire by the side of the road, could be dangerous.

When changing a tyre, It's a good idea to place the tyre you just removed under the car- that way if the jack fails, the car lands on the tyre.

I've seen some nasty accidents on the roadside from cars that moved while up on the jack. It's not pretty.

Using a bottle jack on asphalt, regardless of how strong the road may appear, should only be done with a load pad under the jack. A pc of 3/4" ply wood or 2x6 several inches larger around than the foot of the bottle jack is usually enough the prevent the jack from sinking.

Your jack stands will also sink with out this type of pad. The corners.of.jack stands are thin and will sink instantly without something more solid underneath.
