A/T light

This summer we have had two instances where the A/T light has come on. First was driving up a steep fsr outside of salmon arm it was about 35oC that day and we were about 15km up. we stopped loooked around for 25min and got back in started up and light was off and remained off for the next 10km to where we stopped. Then this weekend similar situation only steeper out of revy, but only 20oC outside. at about 15km up light came on, we stopped it cooled down and we continued on.
Now that we have overheated the fluid twice is it time for a change? if so where is the drain and what volume do I need to add? any sugestions on brand/type of fluid?
I have read that using the drain only gets some of the fluid out and does not really count as a flush and that adding fluid is via the dipstick tube, any feed back on a simple way of doing this with out making a mess?
Thanks
