The reason I want to use solar is two fold. First of all I want to harness and play with this abundant and free resource. This also can lead to triggering other playful resources that require an initial energy push. Additionally I often go for a long camping trips and sometimes I spend months at a time living in one of my vans. Sometimes I find a spot where I want to park a van for a week or two and explore the area either on foot, on my bike or under my wing. In such instances I really enjoy a comfort of a 12 volt powered fridge and a freezer, lights to read and write, fresh charge for my laptop and cell phone and not always quiet music. For that I cannot rely on the alternator charging my service batteries, hence the solar panels.

I describe the simple process of the installation here: http://explorex.com/solar-power-install ... lica-l300/

I still have to clean up the mess but the thing is working!

How much did the total setup end up costing? Pretty sweet.

Did you add in any fuses between the connections?

I'm about to install my set up very similar to yours and noticing many other versions online where people add in fuses between all connections... is this going overboard or good precaution?

It is necessary to install fuses in the circuits, this is about safety.
You can also use the car-type overload circuit breakers to protect circuits.
