OK, here's a newbie question that I can't seem to find an answer for; How do I read the engine oil dipstick on a 98 L400 V6?

it has two notches on the dipstick and no other markings. Seems like the lower one means it needs oil and the upper might mean its too full? Somewhere in the middle? Help?

yup, spot on. Now figure out the auto trans dipstick, hot and cold.

maybe not too full but you can get away with less. I fill to the top mark at a filter/oil change then turn on the engine. The level drops to 1/2.
