Hello All
Just curious as to how many kilometers these engines are good for before any major failures or overhauls. Please post your mileage and thoughts. Lets start at 200,000 km and above.
Thanks

Hi,
mine made 240.000 km and some, then a cabin heater hose failed and drained coolant from the cylinder head which cracked. Same time the fuel pump began dripping. Manual gearbox is still holding up.
The cylinder head may have had issues before, some overheating and lost coolant were signs, but only on bad days. I recommend to have the injectors checked when over 200.000 km

I'm approaching 260,000km, but frequently see 4D56T engined vehicles for sale with 400,000km or so.
I guess it comes down to what you consider a "major" failure or overhaul, and what you consider maintenance. I think needing new head, pistons, rings, bearings, and a rebore is an overhaul, but coolant hoses, radiator, fuel pumps, starter, turbo, and electrical items are just sensible maintenance. 4D56s are known for having lots of blow-by (crankcase fumes) if oil changes are missed, but they do keep on going.

turbo failed at 250 000, went through engine and damage cylinder walls. full rebuild.

230,000 ish for me. The head on my bus cracked not long after CCA mechanic Darren asked me if the head was the original. When I told him it was he tsk, tsked and said that it's more of a when rather than an if the head cracks. When it did go CCA fixed it and did a bunch more stuff and I'm up and motoring again. I expect, with luck, I might see another 200,000...

I'm at 310 000. No major issues yet. I'm getting a bit of squeal, maybe from a bearing in a belt pullie. But that's about it (engine related anyway).

I'm at 210,800-ish with no issue thus far.
Having said that I have resealed my turbo, had the Deli-tune done at CVI. I change the oil religiously and I don't use Castrol. Currently I'm using Total Quartz 9000 5W40 with an additive called PowerMaxx High Performance Nano Engine Super Protection (with graphene). I change out my coolant ~ usually every two years, I use Hepu G11 and mix it 60% water to 40% coolant. I change my ATF like my coolant, every two years.
When I drive, I drive her like a diesel truck rather than like a Ferrari Testarossa. Although the red line is over four and an half grand I try to keep her RPM under three grand, generally shift at 2,500 RPM. Climbing or descending a steep hill in an off road scenario and I'll be in 4 low to keep engine temps down. This also saves your braking system if you're going down long hills.
Falco.
P.S.: I also warm her up every first start-up of the day. It takes about four minutes, until the water needle shifts ~ signifying that the thermostat has opened and the motor is at ambient temperature. All the bolts are torqued to match the ambient temperature of the engine so I wait the four minutes before I put any stress on her. FC.
