Tips and Tricks for changing glow plugs

Hi guys,
I have never changed glow plugs before and would like to give it a go on my own. I understand that sometimes they can get stuck and break and then I have to remove the head to fix this.
Anybody have any tips and tricks when changing glow plugs?

engine should at operating temp prior to removal.
the plugs should turn easily once cracked loose. if they start to bind its usually because of carbon residue on the threads, My method is to go forward 1\2 a turn then out 3/4 turn max. This may need to be done several times to prevent thread damage to the head but I have never broken a plug with this method. I then hand thread a new plug to check the threads. chasing with a tap may be required.
if you have a tight one that won't releas, a good quality penetrating fluid and a long soak....an hour or more does help. I like to soak a small rag and wrap it around the plug base to encourage fluid soaking into the threads.
if you break one its head removal territory and off to a engine shop.

Hey there,
I used deep creep to unseize the glow plugs. I soaked a rag and wrapped it around the glow plugs thanks to your suggestion. It worked like a dream.
Thank you very much for the tips. Van starting perfect on cold mornings now!

..and make sure you have a good assortment of wrenches...I just replaced my glow plugs and noticed the previous owner used 6 mm nuts instead of 8 mm to secure the bar to the plug...Had to bike to CT to get a 6 mm wrench, which they didn't sell separately, so I had to get a full set...
