It could be a few things. Do you still have hazard lights? The regular indicators go through the hazard light switch, and if that breaks you lose indicators.
The lever on the column is usually pretty reliable (for indicators, that is. Headlamps is a different matter.) but it can't hurt to dismantle it and give it a clean.
To get to the flasher unit you have to remove the glove box, but again they're usually pretty reliable.

To add to GBNZ's observations, I was recently replacing the neo-wedge lightbulbs that go in such switches as the hazard lamp switch and I discovered this. Part of the turn signal is the side lamp that illuminates directly beneath the flashing part of that side lamp cluster. Sometimes people wire this part of the signal to be on all the time as an enhancement to the Daytime Running Lamps. Possibly this might be a clue to your enigma. Perhaps a loose connexion or one of those T-clamp connectors that are often used with the introduction of DRLs where the installer clamps onto the existing power lines going to the indicators. Water can get into these clamp connectors. When you turn your indicator on, do your lamps come on at all? Is it that they are not are just not flashing or is there no light at all?
