What do you get for max exhaust temps (EGT)

I was driving up to Whistler last weekend and my EGT gauge (mounted in the EGR blanking plate) reached over 1000*F on a steep stretch.
What is the max I should see before I back off the throttle? It only happened once, most of the time the max I reach is 800F
Thanks!

I drive a Starwagon with the mighty Astron 4D56T engine (86 prancing ponies) but I'm thinking that the story is the same.
Heat is power, until nothing more is achieved from applying the power then heat turns on the engine. This is to say if you are accelerating up a hill and you are not increasing in speed then the next logical thing to occur is your engine takes the heat. that's when I ease off.
That's how I see it.
Falco.

Turn the heat on full. Open windows so you don't cook. Keep RPMS at 12 o'clock. Keep speed at 12 o'clock or slightly less. Slowly cool engine when load is reduced. Watch cars pass you. Enjoy!

The general rule is to try and keep it below 1200F pre-turbo, but up to 1400F for short periods (towing while climbing a hill, etc) shouldn't do any damage. I wouldn't worry about 1000F- in fact that sounds rather good!

Yeah, you're okay I think. I have mounted my probe in the same place and have observed the following.
Average city cruising (light throttle, low speeds): 450 - 600 f
Average highway cruising (high speed): 600 - 800 f
High load high speed (climbing a hill on the highway): 800- 1000 f
I'm careful with my foot when doing passes or exiting up hill though.
The intercooled 4m40 runs so much cooler than my last l300, I could hit 1400 f easily on the same hills, those things needed intercoolers bad...
