Clutch smell? On an auto transmission?

Smells like a grinding clutch/brakes when I life the seat to get at the engine after driving for a while. Very faint. Pretty sure the brakes are OK. Any ideas?

Are you sure it's not the brakes? They can get really hot, it's not a light vehicle.
The only other thing I can think of is the engine bay sound deadener material, if that were to fall against something hot it might smell similar.

Also, the callipers have been known to seize a little from time to time. I noticed when this happened to me that it was less likely to happen on the highway and more likely to happen in the city, when I brake more. After driving for a while, check the front hubs for temperature. I added synthetic high temperature grease to the guide pin and this seemed to solve the problem. I guess it depends on how far gone your callipers are, if this is your issue.
