L300 rubber flooring DIY

One of the first things I wanted to do was make sure the beautiful Chamonix carpet was protected.
Step 1) Purchase some rubber flooring. I got this 7.5 ft. x 14 ft. Diamond Black Universal Flooring from Home Depot for $100.

After doing some measuring, I thought that this was the only thing that was going to fit... I measured the original rug at 8' - so I thought I would have to trim the rubber flooring down the long way, but once I took it out and lined it up, it was the EXACT size of the rug on the SHORT (7.5') side. So either I measured wrong, or the flooring was 8'. Probably the former. I didn't actually get the tape measure out when I had it on the ground.

So I lined it up, drew out the pattern with a sharpie, and just cut away. I had some pretty standard (but newer) titanium scissors that worked well. Snips or shears might work better. I used a standard razor knife to cut out the circles.

I just reinstalled the carpet and laid this down on top. Fits great. Looks good.
I decided I wanted to keep it simple. I didn't screw it down under the rear/side trim. We'll see how time treats those edges.
Next, I'm going to cut some custom floor mats for the front out of the extra material. And I'll probably still have some left over to do the other two cars. :)

What's funny is that the Chamonix doesn't actually have any extra/special equipment that helps in the cold. The two batteries - yes, but as far as I understand, it doesn't give any better cold cranking. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I got mine b/c of the condition/mileage/service record/price/availability. I was looking for any L300 really. This is the one that came up. One of the things I liked about the Chamonix though is the pop out windows rather than the sliders. Mainly because the rubber trim was in great shape compared to all the vans I looked at with sliders.
Also, it gets cold in Boston. ;P

So, if anyone chooses to follow step, I'd recommend a few things.
1) Let the rubber sit out flat for a day or two before cutting. I've got a few wrinkles that I think could have been resolved through just letting it settle for a bit.
2) Cut a little bit extra room around the bench seat attachment points. It's hard to see from the pictures, but there are a few of the bolt points that are sitting on the rubber and sort of pinching it a bit. I'd just make a note of where the bolt points are sitting on the rug and cut a little extra rubber away. Alternatively, you could probably get crafty and cut LESS away, so the rubber covers the feet entirely. The OG bendable metal covering with a big of rug is quite clever, but as long as you don't mind lifting the rubber away when you need to detach the seat, you could measure a bit better than I did.
Otherwise, I think it'll be quite good in the long run.

This reminds me of a story that dates back from the '60s that I heard on the CBC about an American woman who purchased a tract of land that was quite close to the border, to the extent that it took a few days to determine whether it was actually in Canada or the United States. Eventually it was resolved that it was inside the US by about half a mile, to which the woman was recorded as saying "I'm glad, really ~ because Canada has such cold Winters".
You have a great wagon there. Of the various Delica models available the Chamonix is the ultimate "Winter Package". It's not just about the cold cranking power of two batteries laced together in parallel, I've got two 700 CCAs (14,000CCA combined), it's an instant start at -25C/-31.6F. With the Chamonix, unlike the Exceeds &c., that have the more luxurious shag carpeting and velour upholstery, you get also the heavy duty resilient psychedelic carpet and upholstery and extra clear coats on the paint job, as well, at least on the '92s. Also, the Starwagons are bigger than they appear. You can get a stack of 8'x4' plywood in there.
Is your wagon a P25W or P35W (low roof/high roof)?
Falco.
P.S.: Nice job on the matting.

pluckmyeyeout... this is a great idea. My van came missing carpet in the front.. I've been debating what to do about this. I think I may have just found my solution.
I, too, just want to keep it simple..
Oh the smell... hmmmmmmm.
