The lap belts in my 91 l300's captains chairs dont seem to lock at all there is no racheting action at all....just wondering if they need replacing as I dont see how they would work in a accident. Any ideas?
Thanks
Joe

I guess my main question those with lap belts on the captains chairs do they lock when pulled quickly? Like standard seat belts?
Thanks
Joe

There is a post on this site somewhere that goes into great detail on how they work. I know they are different than your typical lap belt as they do not ratchet. It works on some type of inertia mechanism but I'm not sure how. All I know is that they won't be any good for car seats as you can't make them tight to hold the car seat which I'm sure you've already figured out.

Japanese rear seatbelt standards from the '90s were a bit weird. I've seen belts that are webbing-sensitive (locks up if the belt is pulled out too fast), inertia sensitive (locks if it senses g-force, like a car decelerating), and belts which have both mechanisms.
Sounds like you may have inertia sensitive belts- they should lock if you tilt the reel by about 30 degrees or park on a steep slope (or, obviously, if you're braking).

Thanks everyone
The seats belts work just fine ☺. Tested them and they do lock, just slid the seat back quickly while pulling on the belt and it locked right up.
