Auto headlights

Hello everyone this is my first post so I hope I have this in the right place. I have a 96 with auto headlights. Here's the problem, they were working fine at first but now the headlights will not come on by themselves anymore and I have to use the manual setting to operate them. The sensor is working fine for the side lights as they come on automatically after dark or if I cover the sensor but not the headlights. So do I have a sensor problem, a switch problem or what? As I do not have any idea as to how these are wired or switched I am in the dark here. Haha, any help would be greatly appreciated.
