So i noticed that a oil leak started to get worse with my turbo. Seems to be leaking up stream from the turbo.

Does this mean i should replace the turbo? The van does have 311000kms the turbine wheel has very little play not sure if it was not replaced before.

Thanks

Joe

4D56s are notoriously heavy breathers. I know you say the leak appears to be upstream from the turbo, but the source of the oil is most likely blowby in the engine, carrying oil out of the rocker cover and through the turbo into the inlet manifold. Check the turbo inlet hose- the ribbed rubber one in the foreground. If the inside of that is oily then your oil is coming from the breather, not the turbo.

The inlet hose is under suction so any oil is less likely to leak out of any poor joins, whereas it's under pressure downstream from the turbo so it'll spray out anywhere it can.

In any case the oil shouldn't be making it to the outside of the engine. I'd clean the area up, drive for a bit and then look for the leak. My money's on the rubber piece between the turbo outlet and the EGR elbow (replace with a silicone tube and use proper t-bolt hose clamps). Second guess is the gasket where the EGR elbow meets the inlet manifold.

Replacing the turbo might help a little if its seals are worn, but if your engine has too much blowby a new turbo might just leak as badly as the old one- excess pressure in the crankcase pressurises the turbo's oil through the oil return, forcing it past the seals.
