Snorkel performance consensus

Friends,
I have a 1990 Delica, auto 4x4. Prompted by a post in the l300 section about a snorkel group but I thought I would pose this specific question to the Modifications forum. To the folks who have installed snorkels: Did you notice a gain in performance because of the ram air effect ? Specifically did you find that the van is quicker off the line and/or has a little more oomph on the open road? Do you find your egt's are lower? Was it worth the install?
I ask because I intend to install a new 2.5 exhaust and K&N air filter to add a some life to my little engine. I'd like to know if the snorkel would be the cherry on top or something I should skip. I drive the streets of Brooklyn New York and have just installed a pyro gauge. Even keeping my foot light on the pedal I see the temps getting up to 600-700 around town. I'm interested in taking care of my engine and giving it a little kick in the pants as well. Thoughts? Please advise.

I haven't installed a snorkel (yet. What's wrong with me?!) but generally speaking the ram air effect is minor on a turbo'd engine. At higher speeds it should help overcome losses through the filter, but a turbo already compensates for that- as intake pressure drops, a turbo will spin faster which is also why turbos are great for high-altitude work.

If someone sees an improvement in power from a snorkel it's more likely from ingesting cooler air. Which is also usually cleaner air, so they're still a good idea. Also they look cool.

Two things:

Where in the exhaust stream did you install your pyro probe? Just curious.

Also, Do you mind cutting a hole in your baby? Because that's the hardest part. The price of the snorkel is totally reasonable, it looks freaking awesome, and it pulls in cooler, cleaner air. I couldn't personally drill the hole; I had a friend do it.

I had the probe installed at the egr blank off plate. I would have preferred a probe tapped into the manifold as I've seen recommended on this forum but,the diesel mechanic was confident that it would be fine at the blanking plate. Your thoughts?
Agreed on all your snork points. The looks & idea etc, but I do cringe at the idea of cutting a big ole' hole right in her brisket.

Typically I prefer the stock snorkel. I've forded a number of streams and bogs and it's done the job but here's a link worth checking where a member of MDOCUK (and here) ~ Mystery Machine ~ went to the rescue of a number of people during the Gloucestershire floods of 2007 in England.
