Bit the bullet and spent $4k to rebuild the transmission, because everything else is working great.

2 weeks later... coolant mysteriously vanishes from the radiator and reservoir. It's not leaking from anywhere obvious. It's not in the oil either, but surely that's only a matter of time.

I suspect a new Hyundai D4BF/4D56 engine is in my future...

Karma's good, but it's no match for time. It's just an old engine. Though the 22psi of boost probably doesn't help )

Is this your next way to up your HP rather than fix what you've got? Some people think the Hyundai puts out more power and torque.

Maaaybe The D4BF is based on the last of the IDI Mitsubishi engines with flush valves and smoother pistons (for controlled ignition at higher boost/more aggressive advance) and a water-cooled turbo. It's designed to suit an electronically-controlled injection pump for more power, but on cheaper models they just fitted the old mechanical pump anyway.

My existing engine is a pain to rebuild. Turbo engines have different pistons to Normally Aspirated engines, but aftermarket piston sets are all N/A style so you have to use genuine Mitsubishi if you want it reliable. The crankshaft is nitrided, and re-nitriding after grinding is a pain. My engine does have a new head, but it's a protruding-valve style. I'd probably have to re-sleeve the block too... I'm looking at $4k for a rebuild, or $6k for a brand new Hyundai engine- which comes with new injectors, injection pump, alternator, turbo- the lot.

That is bad....

Another Quebec member here (Fleury) did have problems whit his engine a while ago: he was facing the same dilemma ($$$) as you. He chooses the brand new D4BF and never regret it I wish my engine is healty for a loooooong while but the choice for me would be easy: keep my Van and add a brand new engine ! Can't you find second hand 4D56 in NZ ?

Damn GB, it looks like you're only left with expensive options. I wonder if we Yanks would have the option of a NEW D4BF. I doubt it the way the States keep us away from new Diesel tech not brought to market by Ford or GM (and not even Ford sometimes as in the case of the new Ranger..). In the meantime your Delica-less right? is that your only ride? Have done anymore investigating as to where the coolant went?

Oh yes, there's plenty, but they all have more than 250,000km. If I'm going to the trouble of fitting another engine I want everything to be fresh, and the difference in price between a rebuild and a new one isn't completely ridiculous.

Depends what's wrong with the old engine. If the leak turns out to be just a head gasket I'd probably fix it and sell the whole thing, but if it's a cracked head or block I'd sell parts individually. Why? Do you know someone who wants an awesome turbo?

Maybe, you just need to find a friendly importer. These guys sell them http://www.hyundaiengine.com/ but only to distributors, not to individuals. I've read that MaxOverdrive.ca used to import them, so you might get away with a short drive (hah!) over the border?

Nah. I've topped the coolant up and I'll keep driving it (while obsessively staring at the temperature gauge). Eventually it'll become obvious where the coolant is going, and even if the engine explodes I'll be no worse off.

Why not import (yourself ?) another Delica from Japan ? No much more espensive than a brand new engine !

I was not aware that Hyundai made a equivalent engine for the L300. Does it just bolt in? I wonder if they have a equivalent engine for the 4M40. I work for a Hyundai heavy equipment dealer. You got me thinking.

The most relevant reason is that they're not legal to import into NZ any more, as they don't meet emissions or frontal impact requirements.
But the real reason is that my Delica has a lot of work in it and it's almost perfect (for me): 120l fuel tanks, LSD rear/locking front differentials, spare tyre carrier, intercooler, rebuilt transmission... it really is just the engine that's letting me down now. I can buy a second-hand engine locally quite easily, but if I'm going to the trouble of pulling the old engine out I want to put something guaranteed reliable back in- and that means new or rebuilt, which means $$$ either way.

Allegedly- almost. The oil pan will need to be swapped for the Delica one, and possibly the oil filter bracket. Flywheel/clutch will be swapped for my existing flexplate. The water pump outlet is on a different angle so the lower coolant pipe will need some fudging.

I don't think they make a 4M40. Check out the link to the engine distributor above.

Not legal to import (except as spare parts, but that's a nightmare to negotiate). We don't really care about insurance here, it's not a legal requirement.
