Fuel Filter Plug

Can someone elaborate on the function of the electrical plug at the bottom of the fuel filter? I was swapping mine out yesterday and noticed one of the wires was frayed and hanging on by a thread. In my search for a replacement I've seen it called just a fuel sensor, a fuel temp sensor, and a fuel level sensor.

Part # is MB554325

Is there any harm in reinstalling and putting around town if the connection is weak? Or should I wait to drive until the fresh sensor is in?

It's a water sensor... the filter is also a water separator. Getting water into a diesel engine is very bad, but not very likely from the fuel system in good condition. Maybe just drain a little to make sure there is no water in it and recheck it every once in a while until you get it replaced...

Ahhh, awesome. Thanks for the explanation!

I don't drive much but was hoping I wouldn't have to let Morty sit around for 2 weeks waiting on a new sensor. I'll keep an eye on things until then.
