Hi there,

Been having cold start problems with my L400. I replace the glow plugs and it hasn't made a difference. Turns over right away if I plug in the block heater. Coldest its been here the last week is about -1. Any suggestions on how I should trouble shoot this?

I would start with a fuel system flush. To get thinks cleaned up and moving better?
Does it have a hard time with hills first thing in the morning?

If it starts when it's warm from the block heater, it really sounds like the glow plugs aren't working. You've replaced them, but have you confirmed that they're getting power?

Have a read of this recent thread in the L300 forum: http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18557

TL;DR: new glow plugs were faulty or burnt out soon after installation.

Are you saying that the engine cranks over slower when the block heater is not plugged in. I think at minus one there should be no difference in cranking speed. Might be worthwhile getting the battery tested. Also your cables might look good but internally the can be badly corroded. Bad cables and connections will get hot under load (when lots of amps are required). I wired a small red LED light to the glow plug power bar and nounted it inside my van. Now i dont have to listen to the second click and its nice to see how long the plugs stay on after the engine started.
