Yet another starting thread

1988 L300, diesel, manual transmission.
Running perfectly one minute, won't crank the next. I am bad about jumping in and cranking without waiting for the glow plug click. Jumped in, immediately turned the key, starter turned over once, then remembered (again) to wait for the glow pugs, turned ignition off, back on, waited for the click, then tried to start and the only thing now is a click from the ECU area. So far I've checked the fuses, fusible links, and actually gambled and just bought a new starter from Rising Sun and installed it...no luck. Power is making it from the battery to the solenoid but the solenoid is not receiving the start signal when I turn the key to start. Electronics is not my forte so I've tried all the easy/obvious things first, what's next? Is it more likely ECU related or should I keep looking for chafed wires in the engine compartment/dash/steering column?
