Bella Coola in mid June

Hello! I am planning a cryptozoological research trip to Bella Coola during the 3rd week of June this year. This is a British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club (BCSCC) expedition to gather information of the legendary sasquatch of the central coast. I will probably stay up there for 4 or 5 days. We will have night vision, motion-sensing infrared camera and other high tech toys set up. If you interested, please let me know (send me PM). Bella Coola is also home to some big grizzlies, so chances to spot them are quite high.

cheers,
seb

Funny how a big grizzly standing up kinda looks like a sasquatch from a distance. Just a coincidence, I'm sure :)

Okay, no promises, just yet,

But I am interested in an adventure. Not sure what I have on the table just yet for that time period. If nothing else, it will be nice to get out of town for a week and see some kodiaks. Hopefully shooting them with my 300 mm lens and not my 18mm... smiles.

Falco.

No Kodiaks near Bella Coola, they don't range that far south. A friend of mine claims they are pretty much the same species as those they study on Kamchatka however. Some of the best opportunities for Grizzlies used to be near the end of S. Bentick Arm if you're going to have water transport.

So I'll take some pictures of moss instead. Probably a little more safer. I can work my way up to kodiaks later on.... after shooting moss, I can wrap my head around photographing the ferocious field mouse!

I know some people who saw sasquatch personally, including a wildlife/fishery personnel. I am sure that they didn't mistaken a grizzly for a sasquatch. The person who saw a sasquatch in close range said that it had an ape-like face. If you are interetsed in the subject, you can do a search on "Clayton Mack and sasquatch".
Generally, brown bears areall Ursus arctos. There are a few subspecies and the Kodiak bears (Ursus arctos middendorffi of the Kodiak, Afognak and Shuyak Islands (Alaska) are one of them. Typical North American brown bears are called grizzlies (Ursus arctos horribilis. Zoologists and taxonomists these days tend to lump subspecies together, likely there aren't not enough differences in genetics to declare even to the subspecific level. Curiously, coastal grizzlies are darker and larger than the inland populations (likely the healthy salmon diet).
I am sure that grizzlies can be filmed safely inside our Delicas:

I know a few grizzly "hot spots" in the Bella Coola valley and some are just off Highway 20.
If you have any question or like to join, please let me know.

cheers,
seb

Hope you got a 12gauge when your in the thicket we never go into the bush up there without one, there is at least 3to4 maulings a year especially near the rivers, but it is a great place if you mind is prepared. We pack in to go fishing, about 3k in and we always see bears but we also catch BIG fish and eat them on shore so its all about judgment and being prepared down there its unforgiving country.

Okay... lets try this again... got logged out somehow trying to subit my reply and lost my ramblings...

I would be very interested in your unique offer but am unable to commit at the moment due to all the things I have going on right now. Do you do these often?

There was a group up on the Sunshine Coast last year investigating sightings near my place in Davis Bay. Unfortunately they left empty handed. My wife seemed to be of the opinion that the sightings were closely related to my being in the yard cutting the lawn  ... so... after I buried her.... :-D ... OUCH!... cuffed in the back of the head... yes dear!

Kidding aside, I have always been interested in Sasquatch since my junior days camping in Morris Valley with scouts and alway kinda hoped I would see one of these legendary creatures... and, at the same time... kinda hoped I didn't.

Nice video too!... A P25 with a moon roof would be a great shooting platform for photography... kinda like mine! 8-)

Now that would be a great shot!!! One question, would the Grizzly be allowed to drive? I guess he might be too big to fit in the front so you would have to give him in one of the captain's chairs :-D :-P .

I did some archaeology in Bella Coola before. We camped out there for a few months. Keep the camp clean is very important. We did carry firearms when we went out hiking and carrying bear spray is a must for everyone. Particularly "up valley" a bit, by Anako River and Fishery Pool, grizzlies are everywhere. Right down the bottom of "The Hill", there is a dirt road called "Toll Road". Go there just before dawn, very likely you will see them going across the road.
Funny, most sasquatch reports came from the coastal parts of Bella Coola. Clayton Mack and his hunting friend saw one while hunting on the mud flat at the extreme south end of the South Bentick Arm. A friend from Bella Coola told me that, in the summer, loud screams and howls can be heard at night (usually around 2 am) by the government wharf.
I always think now if I actually bought the wrong van (crystal lite roof). I think that jaggedfish's suggestion is great! A P25 with that big sliding moon roof as a mobile photography platform would be any photographer's dream mobile.

I too did some archaeology near there and this post really got me thinking about it. OK, I only flew over and boated into Bella Coola and the coast there a few times, but did spend several months on a number of projects motoring and walking the back country of the Plateau between William's and Anahim Lake. Fabulous country, lots of back-roads, lakes and hills and wide open spaces - perfect for a delica motor trip. I assume you would want to motor there (and back!), though one could take the ferry one direction and make a nice loop journey. Have a great adventure up there!

Hi Scott,

Did you do your archaeology with UBC or SFU? Anyway, I will drive there. The ferry costs way too much. I always like to stay at Bull Canyon, just outside Red Stone.
