Hi,

Little patches of rust are starting to appear all over my bush bars. Very unflattering. Can someone recommend a treatment for this? Is this happening to anyone else?

I've got the same thing on my bush-bar, esp. at the welds. I figure a bit of wire brush or emery cloth treatment and a little white tremclad should do the trick. And it is a bash-bar after-all, so if it looks a little rough around the edges it's a good thing!

Are they white or chrome? First reply good for white but not sure how it'd work with the chrome ones? Anyway, if chrome you can 1st try a SOS pad and if that doesn't work go to a car parts place and get a rust remover made for chrome. This combination has worked great for the chrome on my old VW buses over the years. (Not sure on the Delica as I don't have rust, yet!)

During winter time you can put a light coat of wax or clear grease to protect them.

Glad to hear it also works on the Deli (didn't see why not but hey, never know until you try!). Make sure you don't let the rust creep up again 'cause the SOS will take off most of it but it will end up making permanent marks (like little black craters?) on your chrome and by then the SOS pad won't help anymore.

Still enjoying your 31" and still haven't washed the mud all over your bus?

They are white. I'll try the emory cloth and tremclad ...

I had the rust spot problem and I did the expensive but probably most effective method of dealing with it....removed all the bars, steps, and rear bumpers and had them completely stripped to bare metal and then powder coated in Prince George...cost....$400.

what colour did you have them coated? Any pics? I love powder coating it's way better than paint.

I have planned to get them powdercoated, but it just hasn't happened, in the meantime though I painted on a chemical rust-converter, and then black spraypaint from canadian tire... on the white delica the black bars look really sharp! (of course I may be biased)

Read above in the forum for continuation of 2008 discussion. I have stock chrome bushbars with a little bit of rust so I will try the SOS Pad treatement that was successful above. Is there a brush-on chrome paint or treatment anyone can reccomend to protect after the SOS-Pad rust removal? Waxing the bushbars was mentioned as one option above. I am lazy and would rather not have to deal with taking bars off.

I actually work at a pool and we have tons of chrome handles, bars etc. around. Naturally they rust quickly due to chlorine, heat and humidity. What we do is use vinegar and scotch-brite pads to scour off the rust spots. Then wipe off residue with a cloth as much as possible. To seal and protect the chrome, we use baby-oil. Spread/wipe it in with a soft cloth. This seems to hold off the rust pretty well in a pool, so I don't see why it wouldn't work on a Deli?!

Our white bars started to rust spot pretty bad. I removed them, sanded them down a bit and then coated them with EZ liner from CT. Worked out well. Left with a kind of matte/crackle finish. No more signs of rust after 2 years.
Very happy with it.
