I just got a new side exhaust system installed on my bus and took a few pictures to show what it looks like. I did the side exhaust as I want to install a WVO tank where the old muffler used to be. It's 2 1/2" tubing with stainless exhaust can. It attached 5" down the original down pipe. I was going to use a cherry can but was afraid it would be too noisy. So instead I used a larger exhaust can and almost wish I had used the cherry can as it's barely louder than it was originally. The tail pipe looks closer to the tire than it is, it comes out about 6" in front of the rear tire. The can also looks pretty close to the rear AC hoses but I have some heat shield ready to be installed so it won't be an issue.
Here's a few pictures, as you can see it's a very short system. I've also taken a video so you can hear that it isn't really that loud. On the video I'm revving it to 3300 RPM.
I got it done at Quiet Muffler & Brake on the 7000 block of Kingsway in Burnaby. The total price came to $300 tx included. If I had gone with the cherry can it would have been approx. $235 tx incl'd. Not bad.
So if anyone needs my old and clean muffler can it's free. I'd like to recycle it if possible so PM me back. If interested I'll take pictures to show that it's clean (75000km if original on vehicle).

Update, my old muffler has been spoken for... It's going on Miloki's new ride. Glad to recycle!
Got to take this thing on the hwy to see if it get's any noisier... and if I feel any improvements!
What's next now??? Better headlights?
I usually don't spend so much in so little time of vehicles but I just sold a VW bus so I got some extra $$$ to play with before my wife realizes what's going on ! (she doesn't have to know how much I sold it does she?!?)

Which VW did you part with? Surly not the 65 bachelor bus? The green machine? Must have been tough either way, though I see you're doing a good job of soothing any pain by making some first rate upgrades to your delica! Interesting solution to the where to mount the wvo tank problem. How big a tank do you expect to fit in there? I had pretty much accepted the need to move the spare tire (to a front mount for me) and putting the new tank there, but yours is perhaps an even better, easier solution. Looking forward to seeing the finished product! Good job

Jaggedfish,
I think you only looked at the pictures and didn't read the thing... typical guy! It's all in there...
Konadog,
You guys are gonna kill me. I ended up selling both buses (didn't want to admit ). Since I bought DeliCat I know the VW aren't gonna get driven at all and it's a shame. So they're going to new enthusiasts. After 10 yrs of ownership the split is going to become an advertisement vehicle for the beer Pacifica down in the States and the green machine is going to a very nice gal in the Okanagan.
As for the WVO tank, I got the idea from EricN who's done it before me. It should accommodate the larger of the 2 tanks I'm planning to install. I haven't had a good chance to look underneath in details/mesure... will post once it gets going.

Your set up should be fine as long as you don't care about the noise. Aircare usually requires a muffler but you're not in the GVRD so you should be fine. I have a 1yr old baby that I don't want to be death by the time he grows up so that's why I went with that set up.
Your way can always be modified if you don't like it, it's not like it's gonna cost you much! (couple feet of pipe is pretty cheap)

Uhhh... yeah... Pictures.... pretty pictures.... I also think the word "free" in the line below must've distracted me. Price seems quite reasonable especially given the stainless can.
By the way... I never ask for directions either

You realise of course that you'll have to change your avatar.
It's the reasonable thing to do in order to demonstrate your loyalty to the DeliCat. You want this don't you? To be loyal? Loyal to the Eltricentium of the Delicatinuum?
On a serious note, sad to read that you had to sell the VW buses. I especially liked the split-window. Good to read they will be going to good homes.

Wow! That is a big deal. The 65 must have been esp. tough, but hey, they went to good homes. I loved my VW and was ecstatic to see it years after I sold it in way better condition than I left it in. And given the choice between a VW and a delica, well, it's pretty obvious you've made the right move. Good for you Delicat!

Too early to notice change in MPG but it does have a better feel in power. Don't expect a huge difference but it seems to flow better. I'd like to say WOW what a difference but these are no racing machines to start with... On the freeway is where I notice it more. If I'd do it again I'd use the smaller can the shop had. It would flow even better and would be $60 cheaper. I was concern with the noise at the time but mine is almost the same as the original exhaust so not a worry.
