Truly bizarre. I guess you could call that fate ~ like, what are the odds? How fast was the driver going? It looks like something out of a horror film. Please let me know when I can uncross my legs.

The individual from that jeep was paying attention, he was following 3 other jeeps through a puddle. The log was submerged beneath the water, he never saw it coming. They guys he was out with, got him to the hospital, got his jeep home and ordered all the parts to fix it for him. I believe it was the Calgary Jeep Association.

Good to hear! it's good that they had such a good group with them to help out.
The individual from that jeep was paying attention, he was following 3 other jeeps through a puddle. The log was submerged beneath the water, he never saw it coming.
with all due respect, someone wasn't paying enough attention, it's folley to tackle an obstacle if you don't even know what it is, I understand why it happened, but I refuse to buy in to the idea that this "just happens" and couldn't have been avoided. Any puddle that can obscure a tree of that size is certainly something that should be tackled extremely carefully, if at all, he's lucky that's all that was under there!

I make mistakes, and I'll freely admit it.
I also take responsibility for them. And hopefully learn from them, and if I'm very lucky, I can learn from other people's mistakes and not have to make them all for myself. (that particular one looks like a very expensive lesson in being careful offroad!)

I'm with Green1 on this. I read the storey posted by Trialsmaster and render my own judgement.
I don't see any puddles... anywhere... especially not big enough to conceal the "tree" this fellow hit. Even in his own words, he feels the branch was laying parallel to the road and clipped it with his front wheel which sent it thru the firewall. Didn't necessarily have to be going fast for this to occur (he didn't admit to driving quickly). The added factor of the speed of the branch rotating into the Jeep would add to the impact and help drive it thru the firewall (kinda like swinging a hammer). Only him and his buddies know for sure.
A very unfortunate incident - and freakish to say the least - but this is the point I was trying make in the discussion on skid plates and the necessity for them. You just never know when something like this could occur and a bit of preventative medicine may have helped in this situation. Every situation is different but I wear leathers when I ride motorcycles (even in the hottest weather) and have been saved twice now by the protection they offer... not to mention helmets, which are required... a brief moment can ruin your day, month, and even life.
Sorry about the safety rant but I am fresh off my last motorcycle crash (in October) which would've been much more serious (or even terminal) had I not had protection albeit with a non-DOT approved helmet which I readily admit, contributed to my injuries. Lesson learned.

Okay, I'm gonna take a cheap shot here. Green1, you should take your own advice. Does the phrase "transmission pan" ring any bells <duck>
