My brother in Montreal is overly jealous of our Delica and would be ready to buy one but... His major concern is that he lives in Montreal and has no way to plug it on those cold winter months. (goes down to -30 on occasion)

So given he'd get a well maintained Delica, at what temperature would he get trouble starting it in the winter?

If he gets the "tobasco" heater, any temperature. Otherwise, depends on the batteries, glowplugs and general tuning. Should be able to start at -30. You can also get timers that will simply start the vehicle for 10 minutes every couple of hours. That would keep it warm through the night (assuming it is used every day when that cold).

I've read most of the post on cold starting but lot's of them either referred to a plug in system or as you mentioned the "tobasco"... but I'm curious as a plain no mods Delica with new glow plugs, battery and proper tune up. You think they'd work at -30c? Anyone in the cold part of the country in a similar situation?

Mine (Chamonix w/ 2 batteries) started at -26 pretty much straight off the boat not plugged in (nothing to plug in at that time), and in not great tune. Had to crank it alot. Well tuned it should go with good batteries. As mentioned, the remote starters have options for cold weather start, mine will start it every 2 hours if set for that.

Since then have installed a circulating heater which wokrs extremly well when you can plug in, I use a small Honda generator for returning to trailhead after multi day ski trips.

Sounds like I might be able to convince my bro... very nice! For some reason I have a tendency to talk people into buying Delica's...
