Back up.

The wheel locks will disengage when the wheels turn the other way for a bit.

Also, remember to only shift into 4WD when proceeding in a straight line.

Okay, now I'm confused because that's how to drop the lock on these things. Was the light on before? Could be a sensor problem.

STOP !! Don't drive if it's making crunching noise. Your profile does not list where you live ???? Tell us, maybe someone nearby can drive to you, and you can see how it SHOULD work on a good delica, then decide if you were doing the same thing on yours. Need to determine where the noise is.

Troubleshooting

Automatic or standard. What were yu doing at the time (of-roading or driving on paved dry streets, and for how long ? Is this a New to You deli (how many miiles have YOU driven it, have you had it in 4 wheel drive ok before now? etc etc) ? Have u got a delica mechanic ?

The 4 wheel drive shifter has a 4 low, 4 high, and 2 wheel drive position, make sure that shifter knob moves freely and easily into the various positions, you can do this with the engine off for this testing.

The other postings are correct, just reverse to unlock the 4 wheel drive and clear the dashboard light (our deli takes about 8 inches of reversing, and you hear and feel through your feet a clear clink noise).

Where is the bad noise coming from, maybe you were mud puddle off-roading and have a stick caught in the wheel well / turning etc, or little rocks in the brakes?

Happy to help u troubleshoot more if you need it, keep on touch by this page.
Christine.

It's possible your shift linkage popped out which would keep you in 4x4 with the lock light on but the shifter in 2wd.

If that's the case, then you may still be driving in 4x4H or L on the road, in which case you will break something.

Crunching noise is never good.

Like Tardis said. STOP.

Have a mechanic look at it if you're not comfortable/capable yourself.
