Q's for you veggie's

Putting together a long-range filtration system.

One 20gal aluminum tank (2nd 10 gal add-on later)
Princess auto sender/gauge unit / hoses
hoses/clamps/misc
Pair of Vegpower FV2-10 3-port valves w/ wiring looms
2-valve switch (on/off/purge) in dash

Next is where I'd like some advice.

Racor 900fh or 1000fh with the 300w heater element and a blanket wrap for the filter.

Which would you recommend and why ?

Differences at a glance :

Racor 900 series fuel filter turbine assembly. Filtering capacity 90 gallons per hour.
Dimensions: 17" H x 6" W x 7" D

Racor 1000 series diesel fuel filter assembly. Filtering capacity of 180 gallons per hours.
Dimensions are 22" H x 6" W x 7" D

I can get either for the same price ($10 bucks difference)

Filters cost the same as well.

Thanks !
Jesse

These filters are huge and maybe overkill for what you need. You might want to get Manitoba Delica to weigh in on this, he install one of these in my driveway a few months ago.

What's your goal? These filters might be beneficial for running on crudely filtered WVO like the stuff you might pick up while on a road trip, but if you are planning on running on 10u or better WVO my VegMax filter works great and the replacement filters are only $22 and they last 10,000-15,000km.

This filter looks like it is electrically heated, whereas the VegMax is coolant heated. The advantage is that you don't have added strain to your alternator, and/or you can add a VegTherm 12V heater to boost the temp. I like having both a coolant and electrical heat source for my oil, but this is a PlantDrive-centric view, so take for what it is worth.

Hey,
let me know what you need and I can put a package together for less then what you are going to pay buying it through vegpower. I have purchased all this stuff from the manufacturers that vegpower, plantdrive, frybrid etc. all purchase from and I have a little less of a mark-up...

In my eyes those filters are great for home systems but they are HUGE, very hard to place one and have it fit well in a deli. What micron rating of the filters are available in?

Also this might be your convincing factor, where do you plan on putting it? if you want to put it under the passenger wheel well then keep in mind that the filter housing is a top load style and the 900 requires 5" of 'open space' above the filter in order to fit another filter in, so a total of 22" for the 900 series  . So in other words you will need to remove the filter housing/fuel lines each time you change the filter rather then just screwing in another filter. This will then lead to air in the lines upon reinstallation.

I have placed an order of 12 filters/housings that come with a 2 micron filter and a huge variety of 'additions' available into/onto the housing. You can easily add heaters, primer pumps, electric lift pumps, electric water sensors etc. at later dates.

One of the reasons why I'd like a 900 sized racor filter is two-fold.

1. longevity of the filter itself
2. price and filter availability across the continent

We're going to do a north-south america 6-8month long trip and would like to have an onboard veggie filtration system and a solid one in the Delica itself.

The racor 900 replacement filters are $6 a piece, are available pretty much everywhere and will last quite a long time.

You're right though. For normal use, it's overkill. :-D

I went with the racor 500fg with the 12v heater heater element. It is a good filter but the price with the element was pretty expensive. I understand your reasoning for wanting the 900 but where will you put it? I was able to fit the 500 in the engine compartment with a little bit of other part relocation. I guess there is the space under the battery compartment and I guess I answered my own question!

I personally would go with a centrifuge for a mobile filtering system as you can de-water and filter all in one step and very quickly, no settling which might be difficult while driving anyways :) a 55 gallon drum can be filtered and de-watered in about 3 hours. When I finally put my home system together I will see if I can make it portable or have some of the parts swappable to a portable system.

I just looked/measured about 10 times. :-D

Was almost thinking of moving the delica fuel filter to the front/left empty corner beside the fan shroud and then putting a wvo filter where the stock delica filter was.

Or....

What are the +/-'s of having a heat exchanger and heated filter by the WVO tank in the rear with a set of HIH lines running to/fro the engine ?

Thanks :M

Racor Filters are standard for boat/marine industry, so if you need one on your travels ... go find where the fish boats and tug boats marine supply shops are. Christine.
