Quick one here for those that know the innards of the crystal light shades.
All four of mine are still working, and I'd like to keep it that way. So, what's better - to leave them opened or closed as far as tension on the shades/clips/sliders etc...? I've been leaving them closed for most of the summer.
Thanks
Steve
Are shades under tension when closed or when opened?

Re: Are shades under tension when closed or when opened?
I never thought of that before. I would have thought either is the same tension, and the tension occurs when they are opening or closing. So I've been opening / closing them as little as possible.
But I'm interested in hearing the reply from someone who has actually taken them apart and fixed them - they would know.

They are under tension when closed. With no clips they snap back to open position.

Not sure about that because the push/pull mechanism is a braided cable on a spool: spool spins one way and pushes the blind out; spool spins the other and pulls the blind in. I don't think there is any 'tension' in the system.docsavage wrote:They are under tension when closed. With no clips they snap back to open position.

My clips were broken in a couple shades, they always snapped back (much like those roll up blinds in school) to the open position unless tied shut.

As the general consensus appears to be that I do not know what I'm talking about, and cause more harm than good, I am removing this post so that others are not tricked in to following my ill-advised instructions.
