Afternoon all, with winter on it's way, can anyone comment on specifics for installing a block heater?

I've found some decent threads about part numbers as well as details about where to install (behind the starter). I plan on ordering from Napa (Napa Part # - 605-3509) this week.

I'm curious about removing the block plug? Is it threaded? Do I need a special tool or size socket? I assume all the coolant needs to be drained....

I need to remove my starter anyway, as it's making the awful grinding noise every once in a while.

The frost plug is pressed into the block. Best way I found to remove it is to drill a hole in it with an angle drill. Hook a piece of stiff wire through it, then punch the frost plug into the block with a punch and a hammer. Use the piece of wire to fish out the plug. It is important to not loose the frost plug in the coolant passages as it will block the proper flow of coolant. Oh yes I forgot to mention. I did my install from the top as I hate having coolant drip on my head and face. (however I have a pajero and access is probably easier)

No need to tap threads. The block heater has an "O" ring seal and a butterfly clamp that holds it in. All the work in doing this job is the removal of the frost plug, the install is easy.
