I notice the 1990s have a different style of headlight than the 1991 and later. Are the lights interchangeable? For instance will the LHD E code lights the dealers are selling fit a 1990 with the old style?

no, the lights are not interchangeable, however the 1990 headlight assemblies are easier to deal with as they use standard north american sealed beam lights, you can also swap them with ones from the US that were made for the 1990 Mitsubishi van-wagon.

What makes them not interchangeable? Different mounting points?

The great thing about the 1990 headlights is the availability and cost. It is a very common type and readily available, upgraded halogen bulbs put out far more light then stock lamps. Having both a 90 and 91, the front end bezels are different which would require some modification to change. The mounting points appear different too.
The 90's style is great for a rugged offroad Delica, might not look as sharp but you can find a replacement light anywhere. I would like the 91 turn signal 'headlight' assembly on our 90; considering swapping my work vans (91) front turn assembly into our families 90'.
