transmission trouble

Hi can any one think of why my Delia's transmission is not shifting to overdrive or 4th gear when it is cold. After it shifts into 4th it seems to work fine, but when i first drive away in the morning the transmission seems to be stuck in third gear. The fluid is on the top end of the dip stick when it is hot. I hope some one can help me thank you.

What color is the fluid ?

Have you flushed/change the filter/fluid since you bought it ?

This may or may not be the issue, but in the morning when the the engine isn't warmed up yet you'll be pushing harder on the accelerator to go a given speed, so the cable that controls the shift points of the transmission will be pulled more (as if you were accelerating faster when it's warmed up) and the transmission will shift later at a higher RPM. If you combine this with an improperly adjusted kickdown cable (shift point adjustment) like I had in my van you'll have a hard time getting into 4th when it's cold, except for on a fast down hill segment.

if you read the owners manual you will see that it is not suppose to shift into overdrive until it comes up to temp !! so the good news is that you have not a problem !! lol's IT works the way it should..... :-D :M

cheers

Thank you guys! Its nice to get some info. Its also nice to hear that its normal for a Delica not to shift into overdrive until it fully warmed up my Delica has 85500km on it so i hope that it last a lot longer. Thanks Deliman5000!

Also the fluid and filter were changed the other day and it seemed to have made a difference at first, but now it seems to be the same as it was before the flush and filter change. So the kick down cable sounds like it could be the cause of this problem, any how the van runs fine after it does finally shift into overdrive. I just wanted to know if what is going on would end up causing damage to the transmission if i didn't take any further action. Thanks Deliman5000

as fishslapper said, this is normal behaviour. it's clearly stated in the user manual. This I believe is to attempt to prevent you from driving too hard before the van has had a chance to warm up.
