not the drug the rear diff :P. I have a super exceed with LSD and I don't know how well it should work, is it really only useful under light load? I was out 4x4ing and I ended up in a situation with 99% of the vans weight on the left front and right rear tires and I could teeter totter the van with my body weight. The front right spun and the front left did nothing as expected, the left rear spun and the right rear did nothing as well though, I was under the impression the that LSD should prevent that. Does this indicate that my LSD is borked or is it just not intended for this kind of load?

I would love to get a locker but not sure where is a good place to get one and also I'm quite strapped for cash atm :(.

LSD should help in that situation, however it is no miracle cure. As you mentioned, a locker is much better.

I haven't had the opportunity to test mine in quite that situation, however I have noticed in my back lane, which is on quite a slope, in the winter one side gets quite icy while the other stays clear, I can drive up that in the Delica without a problem in 2wd (though you can tell that one wheel is spinning) however in my work van with an open diff I can't, the one wheel spins, the other doesn't move. now partially that's the garbage tires my work van has, but I'm pretty sure it also means my LSD is working.

Locker for the rear is ARB RD05. $800-900 average online price for the locker. About 500-1000 install depending on where you go.

There is no locker option on the front unless you swap out the carrier/axles for a V6 Montero (larger front diff carrier)

Rear montero/delica LSD's work well.

If you're in a situation like you described (wheels off the ground) apply the brake while feathering the throttle. It will cause it to engage.

thanks, how likely is it that something is getting worn out in the lsd? and how difficult/possible would you think it would be to fix it?

Not certain.

Are you sure you have a limited slip diff ?

If you have little to no load and one wheel off the ground, it may slip and cause the wheel off the ground to spin.

If you apply the brake and feather the throttle, it should grab.

The LSD's on these are pretty much bulletproof. They either work or they don't.

If they don't, you would most likely hear a very loud howling sound while driving or heavy grinding noise coming from the diff.

keep in mind that not all of these vehicles have them, it was standard on the chamonix I believe, but optional on every other model.

thanks again guys, I'm pretty sure it is lsd but I will do the wheels off the ground test this weekend. I'm thinking a detroit locker would be a good option and much cheaper, what would be the main pros and cons between the 2 cheaper types, the Detroit locker (carrier) and "Lock-Rights" or other "lunch box" lockers?

Problem I have with the lunchbox lockers is that they chirp and take some getting used to.

On a short wheelbased vehicle like the Delica's I wouldn't use one.

I'm happy with the LSD rear end. Only reason really why I'm putting an arb in the back is because I got a great deal on it and it comes with 4.625 gears on it already which will help with the 5spd gearing, otherwise I would've sold it. Lots of work to put it in for me.

LSD is useless in the above situation. You might have had some luck if you applied the parking brake and tried driving it out but not likely. LSD needs there to be some traction on both wheels to make it actually work. No traction, no work.
