burning smell and oil on ground

Ok, I've noticed a little bit of a burning smell when exiting the Delica, but with the big rain we've had today I notice there's either oil or diesel on the ground where i park. I check the oil quite often, but the dipstick looks right up still. What could it be???
I'm taking it to Marigold Service in Victoria tomorrow , where they said they could have a look, but if anything needs doing, will have to wait until friday..
Hmm

What kind of oil ?
Diesel, engine or transmission ?
Marigold .... has not received favorable reviews here.
Tread lightly with them.
Just a couple .

If it is something else... have any service options surfaced in Victoria besides Marigold?
I personally wouldn't take my van back to marigold even if you paid me, everything they touched had to be redone when I took it to CCautos for the major tune.

I jumped out of the van to let Brian back it in with the trailer (jamtart me!). So he let it cool down, and he turned off the key and took it out, and the deli was still running. Couldn't figure out why, hummed, hawed, scratched our collective heads....
turned off the headlights and the van shut down. Is that normal?? Weird??? I guess its better than the headlight beeping "shut off your lights stupid" alarm. It sure gets your attention!
Anyhow, great weekend, excellent meeting everyone who came out to Snow Creek. Good fun all!!
I have had the same thing happen to mine, the DRL was done at Marigold so I'm thinking it was done to the same level quality as the couple other things they did to it (BTW I was not impressed). I plan on redoing pretty much everything they touched but of course I have no time.
If you read about our experience, you'd know I'm not surprised that you aren't impressed with the work done at Marigold. Make time before you become very sorry you didn't and have to call a tow truck.

you probably have a broken seal, is right beside your oil pan all oily?if so your in the same boat as me and need to have the seal replaced. once i get the money together i'm gonna get mardy to do it, until then i just watch the oil level and fill it accordingly.

Ouch, ok.. I just read it in the Wiki.. So, is there a better option then?
I'm not sure what kind of oil it is, as it's in the gravel. It looks like regular oil to me tho..
Seal as in front engine oil seal? Cause I had that replaced in august before I bought it.. CCAutos did it, and I can't see him effing it up. Hopefully it's nothing serious...
I will crawl under there tomorrow, cause right now it's too dark out...

Could be a few things.
most common is the Injection Pump leaking because of the sulfur diesel here. Clean/Dry paper towel or rag and clean the under/sides of the IP until dry. Then start the Delica and run for a few mins. Run your finger around the sides and bottom to see if it's leaking. If it is, it's a rebuild. $$$
next is the halfmoon seal facing the rear (valve cover gasket). It's an inexpensive and easy fix. While doing that, look for pitting on the head and fill with silicone/gasket sealer if need be.
Or check the oil pump on the back of the alternator / the banjo bolt and the attached hoses/clamps. Either one may have come loose.

Maybe (hopefully

) it's just the turbo dribble. Mine didn't leak for the longest time, then one day...

an oil spot on the ground. Check the aluminium disc-looking thing just above the oil filter. I wipe Hazel's off every few days otherwise it leaves a spot on the ground. I gather this is a fairly common leak. And while I can't recommend any mechanics in the Victoria area, I can say that I drive 125km each way to get ccautos to service my bus. Peace of mind knowing the same, qualified and motivated shop is doing the diagnosing and wrenching. Worth the drive

I was just reading about the injection pump. It's a pretty major job to do.. I hope for the best case scenario.
I phoned Marigold and they said they could look at it tomorrow...so I will let them look, and hopefully see the problem if any and decide from there if i let them deal with it. I'd rather take it to Glen in Coombs for sure, as he's a decent guy and knows his stuff.
If it's the turbo, does that mean it's a seal or is it about worn out?

If it's just a little dribble from the turbo it means you need not sweat over it - lots of delis have dribbly turbos. Get under there and give it a little wipe every few days and your good - hope that's all it is...

Hi Chris,
When I first purchased my van I had it checked out and discovered that because the van was likely sitting for a while, not to mention shear age, the seals had dried out and although the timing belt had recently been changed it now had oil on it from the leaky seals which was a major concern. This may or may not be the case with your van.
I would recommend a pleasant drive up the Malahat to Coombs and talk to Glen at CC Autos. Glen is a reasonable chap who from my experience is more interested in having good referrals and building up a strong healthy customer base than focusing on the bottom line of the first invoice. My experience with him has been a very pleasant one in deed. If I were to have mechanical troubles whilst on the Island ~ Coombs Country Autos is where I would go, as a matter of fact, if I were to be on the Island and not have any troubles ~ I would still likely drop in and pay him a visit as he is a wealth of information and an all round nice guy.
Another page you might wish to check out (I see you have already done so) is the Delica Wiki page that can be found on the front forum page or right here: http://wikrad.com/delica/index.cgi
In particular the "To Do List", which can be found on this page. You won't necessarily need to do everything on this list but will help you to get to know your van.
I don't know anything about Marigold other than what I have read on this site. Pretty name, 'though.
Falco.

Here's probably a stupid question:
Does diesel have that look about it, almost like a rainbow, when in a puddle of water? I'm thinking my problem is a diesel leak rather than an oil leak.. So, that would narrow it down a little bit...

Diesel is oil ~ just like kerosene; jet fuel or what ever you wish to call it. Ergo it ought to leave a rainbow. That would be my guess.

I will be extra vigilant. Ya, I don't think if it's anything major that i will leave it for them, but it doesn't hurt for them to have a look see..
I will let you know what happens.. Thanks all... :)

If you're unsure of what is leaking (engine oil/diesel/trans fluids) or where to look, I strongly recommend to take it to Glen CC Auto or somewhere other than Marigold.
If you're not a competent mechanic or have mechanical skills, then you take the service shop's word on what things need or should be done to your vehicle.
You want a trustworthy mechanic/shop.
I lived in Victoria for a number of years and had classmates (Univ) take their vehicles there years ago.
They ALL had issues with the service. Not the service people, but the actual physical service done on their vehicles. All of them had to have things either rebuilt or replaced that Marigold serviced wrong/poorly. These were just normal Toyota/Chevy vehicles.
If you read through this board, you will notice quickly that there are competent mechanics and services shop reps that are involved in discussions/troubleshooting here.
If you end up going to Marigold, all the best to you. I have yet to hear of one single instance where anyone was satisfied with the service there (at least to their knowledge before anything broke down/needed to be re-serviced).
I highly recommend to take the advice here.
My 2 cents.
