Is this hose essential?

Hey folks,
had some time to kill and opened up the driver side inspection plate and found that there are two duct hoses that I'm sure are supposed to have a connector in between. picture below. Anyone know if it an essential connector?

Is this hose essential?
it is essential that there NOT be a hose there...
it's to let any particles scooped up by the air intake drop out before the air filter, it's actually a brilliant bit of design.

It's really brilliant when it comes to fording creeks, too. It's like an in house snorkel. The filter housing itself has an one-way valve in the bottom of the dust trap for letting things (such as water) out.
