Pretty sure every one has heard that super annoying squealing sound most shit cars make in the winter. well once i finally got the deli to start today i too had the ever so annoying squealing fan belt.
-is this something i need to fix immediately?
-how much would i be looking at?
- aside form being irritated for the first 2 min of driving is there any other consequences of not fixing it?

could be another belt? would be my main concern...that and the belt probably isn't that expensive, it's getting the damned thing on that may be a pain.

I had a squeaky belt, or so I thought. Took to ccautos who found the lower plastic fan shroud had distorted and was rubbing on on the pulley. They guys scrounged up a slightly less distorted one from a wreck, trimmed a little plastic and with new belts and a better looking pulley had Hazel running smooth (for a diesel, anyway) and free of squeaks. Glen told me that the shroud distorting like that is a fairly common source of persistent belt squeaks. Good luck getting it sort out Patty

Considering the fans in these vans don't have belts, I suspect it would be the water pump/alternator belt.

If it was the timing belts, you'd have bigger problems.

Since doing my alternator I've become more keenly aware of the significance of this belt(s). It drives the oil pump. I'd assume this screetching is kinda something to deal with sooner rather than later. Don't need oil not being moved around as it should be...

Yes, the alternator is belt-driven and the oil pump is on the back of the alternator. No alternator-spinny, no oil-pumpin'.

Could be you just need an adjustment of the tensioner on your alternator. What was the condition of the belt when you removed the alternator? Dry and cracked? Glazed? Wet (like with oil)? Also, the water pump is in that area, and the glycol from the coolant would be an issue for the belt (leads to deterioration).

You don`t need to fix it immediately, but... you`d better do that. Especially if it`s alternator belt, or may be mararmeisto is right and "...you just need an ajustment of the tensioner on your alternator"
I was driving for two months with such sqealing sound and nothing happend. But, that was rather extreme situation (I was out of money). So if you love your deli, fix it!
P.S. May be it`s power-steering belt?

The pump on the back of the alternator is a vacuum pump that is just well lubricated. If the belts break, your brakes get very difficult to depress and it runs a little worse, but you will still be pumping oil.

By necessity the oil pump is generally direct driven and well protected from failure.

alright so im getting that there are three belts
1) timeing belt
2) alternator/oil belt
3) power steering belt

the squealling noise itself would be? rubbing belt agains pulley or what have you. why does it only occur int he cold and on start up?

If it's only squeaky when cold / startup, my guess would be that the alternator/oil belt or the power steering belt has deteriorated and become brittle so it slips a little on the pulley until it has warmed up and regained proper grippiness...

I had this noisy squealing-at-start-up problem for a few weeks now and yesterday went under the van to see if i could tighten the alternator belt(s). There are 2 skinny ones on the alternator and YES they were fairly loose.

HOLY JEEZ did I ever have a huge job just to get a socket and spanner on that tensioner!!! IT has to be in one of the hardest to reach spots on the engine and I had to remove the fan shroud as well.....anyways after 4+ hrs of under-over-under vertigo I got the belts tightened....and no more squealing!!
