Cup Holders redux

So, after looking at a bunch of cup holder mods that have been posted, I bought a DIN1 insert off of ebay and installed it today. It's basically a knock-off of a Ford Taurus cup holder, minus the uber-stupid coin sorter. But, If you like sorting coins, and don't mind having a Ford part in your Deli :o you can likely get one at your neighbourhood scrap yard.

Mine is similar or the same as a few others I've seen here and the main complaint was that there's not enough clearance between cup and stereo.

I remedied this by re-drilling the holes in the mounting plate, allowing the cup holder to protrude about a 1/2in past the stereo.

Works great! The cup holder comes with a frame that slides on after installation so that the protrusion doesn't look odd.

It still doesn't take large diameter insulated cups, but there are some around with a smaller base that fit fine. Now I can stop doing the gumby contortion while driving and trying to reach my coffee. I also dislike accessories that look like tack-ons. This one looks like it belongs.

These pics are before re-drilling. The front edge now sits slightly ahead of the front of the stereo tuner knob.

Great idea Nishby

Youre the second Deli that Ive seen with that holder set up. Mine was the first. And its a pain when the cup changes to that station that has nothing but static every time you hit a bump.

What's in the "free box"? Or is it just "free" of anything?

I got one of these setups too, but I find it's really only good for cans of soda pop. I still use it though, because I find the vurv-console cup-holders are great, but maybe a bit too bit for cans.

The "free box" is just a tray with a felt bottom. I keep the spare adaptors for my solar phone charger in there. Re-drilling the mount plate allows for tapered take-out coffee cups as well as pop cans. The cup just touches the stereo knob but isn't pressed hard against it. On my stereo the bumps will only change the volume if anything. I am a little concerned about bumps causing coffee slosh-over to hit the stereo though. I guess I'll find out on my next road trip. :?

Yeah, you'll definitely want to be careful about slosh over. Early 2000's VW Jettas had their cup holders above the radio, and I bore witness to a coffee splash that shorted out the radio for a week! Props to Monsoon stereos, It worked fine as soons as the coffee dried up!

In 2004 VW moved the cup holders to the parking brake console.

BTW, that's a really nice install you did there!

Make that 3 then. Sorry J. Paul, but when we met back in December I do recall a lil nip in the air. Musta been the reason for my nads making that hasty retreat up under my kidneys
