Synthetic Oil as fuel?
I finished changing my synthetic oil recently and I was wondering if it would harm my engine to add it to the fuel?

if it's clean then you'd be doing your engine a favor.
I ran two tanks of synth motor oil and it purred like a kitten.
Too bad oil costs so much. That's the shortfall.

define clean :) It is pretty black but I'm sure there is no debris in it.

filtered clean.
it will blow more black smoke but it runs very smooth.
try it. you'll appreciate the lack of knocking.

Other that it's even worse than diesel for the environment it should work. There is a reason why you get a fine in Europe for having heavy oil in your fuel tank.

Crap I put about a liter in without filtering it, how would you suggest filtering it? I didn't like to hear that it is even worse for the enviroment.

Re: Synthetic Oil as fuel?
maybe its worse than diesel to burn, but you are reusing something otherwise classified as toxic waste, so you get points for that

doesn't it get recycled when you take it in?

Hey dfender, if you're worried about your fuel having gunk in, you can drain it our the bottom of the fuel tanks, there is a big bolt there on the bottom. Just need a big container to catch it (plastic baby bath or canning saucepan). Or maybe the little $5 plastic white and red pump (Cdn Tire or marine stores) will be long enough to pump out what you can from the fuel filler nozzle (havent tried it).
Funnily enough, I changed my oil this weekend, as was wondering the same thing.
Christine.

Funnily enough, when most waste oil is 'disposed of', it's commonly burned in a 'waste treatment facility'. While other uses include asphalt, or re-refiners, most of it is sent for use in special space heaters (which means it is burned), steel mills (where it is used as a coolant and burned), and/or industrial or utility boilers (where it is burned).fexlboi wrote:Other that it's even worse than diesel for the environment it should work. So, pouring it into your fuel tank is, by some accounts, saving the environment because you're burning it (which was going to happen anyway) before it is transported all over the place to a facility where it is going... wait for it... to be burned.
As for filtering it, I drain it out of the sump, let it sit for a couple of weeks and then slowly pour it into the fuel tank. The oil filter is just as fine as a the fuel filter, and unless your engine is falling apart, there won't be any chunks in the fuel. If you want to do some filtering (without getting too involved), make sure the oil is still warm and pour it through a coffee filter. That'll catch anything big enough to be a problem. And if you try this coffee-filter-method when the oil is cold, it will take much longer than you're probably willing to let it take.

You just miss one big thing. This 'waste treatment facilities' are usually built to burn toxic stuff, which means they (should) have a pretty damn good filter system before the exhaust hits the environment. Cars, specially our old beloved Delica, just burn the stuff and blows it right in your neighbourhood.mararmeisto wrote:Funnily enough, when most waste oil is 'disposed of', it's commonly burned in a 'waste treatment facility'. Re: Synthetic Oil as fuel?
I kind of feel the same way fexlboi , but mararmeisto has one point about the fuel that is burned or recycled for industrial use.Transporting the stuff 2-3 times ,all the while burning fossil fuels
Does seem crazy !!! Kinda like how it takes more than 1 gallon of gas to make 1 gallon of ethanol .
Look at the use of algae to make fuel !! (kinda off topic but cool anyway) i think this has major potential . Of course we need to move away from internal combustion altogether if we really want to
fix things.
